Welcome to Uppercase Life, where we're taking action in the face of excuses. I'm your host, Joseph Brewster, and speaking of excuses, I want you to think for a minute about something that you would like to do but haven't been able to. Something that is important to you. Maybe some passion project that you have or an ambition that you felt, maybe a lifestyle change and you've thought of it.
In fact, maybe you've thought of it a lot, but you haven't felt able to actually accomplish it yet. You've got the thing in your head. All right. Now think of the reasons why you feel like you can accomplish it. Maybe it's time, maybe it's money, maybe it's the environment that you're living in or your lack of access to resources of some sort.
Now, now that you've thought of all that, ask yourself, how does that feel to me right now? How do I feel when I think about this thing that I want to do? Am I feeling sad? Am I feeling frustrated, angry, disappointed, discouraged? Now I'm going to challenge you with something. I'm going to say this, and your immediate reaction is probably going to be, that's not true.
But I'm going to make a blanket statement that I think applies to every single one of you. Now, I could be mistaken. I could be mistaken. Maybe you have the unique situation that this statement doesn't apply to. And you know what? I bet you're going to think you do, but I don't think that you do. So here's the statement I'm going to make.
You could do more with what you already have. If nothing changed today except your attitude and the actions you're taking towards that goal, you could do more. Let's say that money didn't come in. Let's say that nobody else pitched in to help you out. Or maybe some of the opportunities you were hoping for don't come through. Let's say you don't receive the support you'd wanted, and let's say that your everyday life doesn't really change all those circumstances.
They continue. I think you could do more with what you already have. And my challenge to you is this. And look, I am saying this to you and I am saying this to myself, and I understand that I am putting this in a recording. I'm going to have to answer to this later on because I feel exactly like you feel so many times.
There are a lot of things that I'm really interested in doing or I get passionate about, and then I shut them down in my own head because the barriers to achieving them seem too high. But can you can you set aside some excuses and take some actions today on those things, assuming circumstances, resources, money and time maybe will not be changing.
Say to yourself, Is there a way I can renegotiate the attempt at doing this thing and to make some progress, get some forward momentum going without anything else changing. Just me setting my excuses aside and taking action with what I already have. Because here's the truth. The unfortunate truth, I think, is that if you're listening to this, you're probably in a fairly blessed situation and you may hear that and think, well, no, you don't understand.
I think, well, maybe you are not wealthy. Maybe you are going through a difficult time in your life. True. But if you're listening to this, you have access to some of the most incredible technology the world has ever seen. You're in a situation where you are on the upswing of trying to make some improvements in your life, where you wouldn't even be listening to this in the first place.
You probably have some people around you that support you. Maybe not a lot, but I bet you have some. You are blessed. You have opportunities and access to things that there are probably millions of people in the rest of the world that would love to have those things and they don't. Do you even recognize the potential in your life, the way your life currently is?
And that's a hard question because honestly, I'm not sure that we can without the comparison. You know, we get in our own heads, we have our excuses and they sound really legitimate to us. We see these barriers and we think this is just too much. It's too big, it's too hard, it's too expensive. It's going to take too much of my time.
My family wouldn't understand, my friends wouldn't support it, etc., etc. But I can guarantee you, I can guarantee you there's something more you could be doing. And if that dream hasn't died inside of you, I would take that as a sign that there is still something more you should be doing and you probably substituting excuses for actions. Maybe you got tired of trying.
But you know what? If I'm being honest sometimes it's not that I got tired of trying, it's that I never even started trying because I talked myself out of my own dream with excuses and barriers. What if you stopped making excuses today? You took what you already have in your possession. The resources, the relationships you already have, the finances you already have, and you gave a good effort towards that thing.
What if you stopped sitting around feeling sorry for yourself and you just got up and started making a difference in the world? And if that comes across sounding a little harsh. Listen, I'm talking to me. I know what it's like. In fact, just today, actually, as I'm recording this episode, I have struggled so much to get this done.
Not because this episode was difficult or complicated, not at all. But actually, the attempt at trying to record today has been interrupted multiple times because of various external circumstances, to the point where I only needed to record for a short amount of time, and I just felt like I couldn't find one interrupted time. And then technology wasn't cooperating.
And man, I just had all the excuses. And I am recording this after a whole day of just being so sick and tired of trying that I wanted to quit. I'm saying to myself, I got this. I am not going to substitute excuses for action. I can make this happen. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't happen in the future.
Do with what you have. Make a change today. Stop waiting around to win the lottery. Stop waiting around for somebody to come in and wave a magic wand over you and make things happen. Stop waiting for some incredible event to shake your life up so much that you'd appreciate what you have and you would act on it. Make the change for yourself right now.
Give yourself some dedication. Give yourself some motivation. Stop waiting on things to change and change them.
